I have always been a firm believer in voting, until this belief was recently questioned as I read Tolstoy’s The Kingdom of God is Within You. As a student and teacher of history, I am well aware of the sacrifices that have been made for my right to vote. People of every ethnicity and gender [...]

My Choice Not to Have Health Insurance
NOTE: This article was previously published on Inward/Outward.
I desire to be a good and faithful steward of resources over which I have been given control. This means trying to minimize my personal consumption while using resources in ways that help build God’s Dream of the Creation for all. Sometimes I mention to others some of [...]
Dream Without Being Asleep
Dream (noun): an unrealistic or self-deluding fantasy;
visions of the “me” that we think we should see.
This is a dream that screams
we NEED more clothes,
we NEED more money,
we NEED more shoes,
we NEED more music,
we NEED more…
-absence-
To be freed from that need
we are taught to believe.
Reteach us so we perceive
its flaw.
Pile these false dreams onto the [...]

A Reflection on the Cross

50,000 Pesos for Jorge
It’s after dinner at Casa del Migrante in Tijuana, Mexico. With so many people moving about, the shelter feels alive. The 150 or so beds are nearly full but more and more men arrive each night. Most have been deported from the United States and know nothing about Tijuana. They come to Casa for free [...]
